The preserve, as well as other outdoor park facilities throughout South Orange, provide an outlet for hikers, joggers, cyclists, and sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Cameron Field and Meadowland Park offer amenities for baseball, soccer, and tennis, as well as playgrounds, and areas for picnics and outdoor summer concerts.

South Orange Schools

Combining services with neighboring Maplewood, the South Orange-Maplewood School District includes six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Columbia High School has been nationally recognized for its academic excellence. South Orange is also home to Seton Hall University, a nationally recognized institution.

South Orange Transportation

South Orange has two New Jersey Transit train stations and a jitney commuter bus which runs a shuttle service between the South Orange Station and multiple South Orange locations.

Commuters have easy access to New York City. Folks that live in South Orange have a convenient stop on the Midtown Direct train line. This line gets to Penn Station in about 40 minutes and the drive to the city with light traffic takes about the same amount of time. The Gladstone Branch Line also provides service to the city and Hoboken where people can transfer to the PATH or the Light Rail. It really is a commuter haven.

Excellent schools. As we mentioned above, this is a great place to raise kids and it has excellent schools. There are several primary schools in the area for different grades such as Annex for grades kindergarten through first grade, Marshall elementary grades kindergarten through second grade, South Mountain Elementary for grades kindergarten through fifth grade, the South Orange middle school, the Columbia high school, and an Early Childhood Center for preschoolers.

The high school ranks as one of the top school districts in Essex County and because South Orange is also a college town, were home to Seton Hall University, a private Catholic University named in 2021 of the best colleges by US News & World Report.

Year-round activities. This is a nature lover's dream. There's so much to do in the outdoors such as visiting some of the many parks around South Orange, sports fields, and winter activities such as ice-skating on Duck Pond were sledding at Floods Hill. With trails and parks, stunning views on the South Mountain Reservation in the beautiful 25 foot Hemlock Falls, the outdoor activities, events, and festivals are endless. South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) is a fantastic destination with theater, music, art, dance, and many other forms of entertainment. It has a Mainstage Theater accommodating over 400 attendees and it's home to the Seton Hall University Arts Council performances, which includes classical concert series, jazz, and many other theater performances.

With a fabulous combination of small-town charm and cosmopolitan culture, South Orange makes a great destination for visiting, young families, retirees, and anyone looking to live permanently in this type of an environment.

Within the city limits of South Orange, you'll find approximately 30 to 40 real estate listings at any given time. Condominiums and townhouses start at about $250,000 with single-family homes starting at about $700,000.
