It was originally incorporated as New Providence Township in 1809 from portions of Springfield while it was still part of Essex County. New Providence became part of Union County in 1857 and portions of the Township were taken to create Summit and in 1899, part of the borough of New Providence was created. The name of the Township was changed to Berkeley Heights based on the results of a referendum held in 1951. It was named for John Berkeley one of the founders of the Providence of New Jersey. Residents of Free Acres pay tax to their Association, which maintains the streets and community swimming pool and approves architectural changes to homes, and then pays a lump sum in taxes to the municipality of Berkeley Heights. This unincorporated community along the border of Berkeley Heights in Union County features about 85 households just 33 miles west of New York City. These residents pay a lease for the land which is owned collectively by the community. Free Acres also offers a farmhouse and a spring-fed pool.
