Combining services with neighboring Maplewood, the South Orange-Maplewood School District includes six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Columbia High School has been nationally recognized for its academic excellence. South Orange is also home to Seton Hall University, a nationally recognized institution.

South Orange has two New Jersey Transit train stations and a jitney commuter bus which runs a shuttle service between the South Orange Station and multiple South Orange locations.

There are several primary schools in the area for different grades such as Annex for grades kindergarten through first grade, Marshall elementary grades kindergarten through second grade, South Mountain Elementary for grades kindergarten through fifth grade, the South Orange middle school, the Columbia high school, and an Early Childhood Center for preschoolers.

The high school ranks as one of the top in Essex County. Additionally, South Orange is also a college town, home to Seton Hall University, a private Catholic University that was named in 2021 as one of the best colleges by US News & World Report.

Year-round activities. This is a nature lover's dream. There's so much to do in the outdoors such as visiting some of the many parks around South Orange, sports fields, and winter activities such as ice-skating on Duck Pond or sledding at Floods Hill. With trails and parks, stunning views on the South Mountain Reservation, the beautiful 25 foot Hemlock Falls, outdoor activities, events, and festivals are endless. South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) is a fantastic destination with theater, music, art, dance, and many other forms of entertainment. It has a Mainstage Theater accommodating over 400 attendees and it's home to the Seton Hall University Arts Council performances, which includes classical concert series, jazz, and many other theater performances.
