Living in Westfield, New Jersey

Westfield HistoryHomes for sale in Westfield NJ

Like a lot of towns and villages in Union County, Westfield is rich in history and originally took its name from the rich fields west of Elizabethtown and for over 100 years went by the name of West Fields. Town records date history back to 1699 however, it wasn't until 1720 that settlers became numerous enough to constitute an actual community. The original village, now the downtown district, was settled in 1720 as part of the Elizabethtown Tract. It was originally formed as a Township and was incorporated in 1798, part of the New Jersey Legislature act incorporating 104 townships. In 1857, it became part of the newly formed Union County and portions of the Township were taken to form Rahway Township, Plainfield Township, Fanwood Township, Mountainside and Cranford Township. The town of Westfield was incorporated in 1903 replacing Westfield Township, which still stands today.

Westfield is where small-town meets urban neighborhoods. Many folks choose to move out of the big city into smaller communities and villages like Westfield. Residents love the town for children's activities, urban living, a bustling downtown, a wealth of transportation options, and a vibrant cultural scene. With many benefits of suburban living, Westfield offers well-regarded schools, a sense of community, and attractive homes.

“Westfield is big enough that there are a lot of ways to get connected but small enough to feel like you can really get to know everyone in this town,” - Local resident for 32 years.

Considered the #1 Best places to live in Union County, Westfield is known for being family-friendly, offering many activities and events for those of all ages, a vibrant summer movie series, and the Westfield Festifall, a celebration of fall featuring entertainment, food, and over 300 vendors.
