Living in Westfield New Jersey

Westfield New Jersey is located in Union County between Plainfield, Springfield, Clark, and Union and sits just south of Highway 22 with Highway 28 running east and west to the center of the town. Westfield HistoryHomes for sale in Westfield NJ

Like a lot of towns and villages in Union County, Westfield is rich in history and originally took its name from the rich fields west of Elizabethtown and for over 100 years went by the name of West Fields. Town records date history back to 1699 however, it wasn't until 1720 that settlers became numerous enough to constitute an actual community. The original village, now the downtown district, was settled in 1720 as part of the Elizabethtown Tract. It was originally formed as a Township and was incorporated in 1798, part of the New Jersey Legislature act incorporating 104 townships. In 1857, it became part of the newly formed Union County and portions of the Township were taken to form Rahway Township, Plainfield Township, Fanwood Township, Mountainside and Cranford Township. The town of Westfield was incorporated in 1903 replacing Westfield Township, which still stands today.

Westfield is where small-town meets urban neighborhoods. Many folks choose to move out of the big city into smaller communities and villages like Westfield. Residents love the town for children's activities, urban living, a bustling downtown, a wealth of transportation options, and a vibrant cultural scene. With many benefits of suburban living, Westfield offers well-regarded schools, a sense of community, and attractive homes.

“Westfield is big enough that there are a lot of ways to get connected but small enough to feel like you can really get to know everyone in this town,” - Local resident for 32 years.

Considered the #1 Best places to live in Union County, Westfield is known for being family-friendly, offering many activities and events for families with children, a vibrant summer movie series, and the Westfield Festifall, a celebration of fall featuring entertainment, food, and over 300 vendors ideal for families and people of all ages.

Westfield Downtown

The Westfield downtown area is known for events, festivals, and just a great place to spend some time. The Town Book Store is renowned for its personal recommendations and customizes a book club specifically for its participants. Check out the Savory Spice Shop and Williams Sonoma for fantastic recipes, kitchen tools, and cooking advice. The Oils Room is an essential oils four-week boot camp starting every January teaching residents and visitors how to live a healthier lifestyle using natural oils. Bareburger is the downtown's vegan and healthier side of dining with unique sweet potato burgers, wild rice salads, and green goddess dressing! Mmmmm...

There are also fantastic things to do on your date night including the Addams Tavern with both private event rooms, activities, and some of the most delicious brunch in Westfield. If you're new to the area, check out their Harvest Pork Chop, a guest favorite for over 20 years. Limani, 1958 Cuban CuisineSweet Waters Steakhouse, and Xocolatz are some other great favorites for a great night out.

The downtown Westfield area also has several salons, health and wellness facilities, and great boutiques. From the Westfield Fitness Studio to Club Pilates Westfield, yoga studios, cryotherapy clinics, and harmony meditation, you can definitely find your zen in downtown.

There's a central kindergarten, six neighborhood elementary schools, two middle schools divided by the north side and south side boundary and one high school for grades 9 through 12. Westfield also has the Lincoln Early Childhood Center and all high school students are eligible to apply to attend the Union County Vocational-Technical School, which includes the Magnet High School, the Academy for Information Technology, the Academy for Allied Health Sciences, the Vocational Technical High School, and the Academy for Performing Arts, all in Union County.
